Published in Vanity Fair, in the October 2016 edition, Kohler showcases an advertisement of their faucet collection. The advertisement features a woman sitting on a table in a dim room. The headline of the newspaper, titled “Wanted” is partially noticeable. A police officer, blurred in the foreground, holds a newspaper under his crossed arms. The part of the newspaper that is visible is an image of a woman that appears to be the woman sitting on the table. In the center of the table lies a faucet marked as a piece of evidence. The white text nearing the bottom of the page proclaiming, “Never Too Wanted,” is in contrast with the cool colours of the background. The room is illuminated by one light source in the top left center, which allows the areas where the light is hitting to be prominent. The faucet seems polished and new, contrasting with the dark stained walls of the background. The modest design of the faucet establishes a bold appearance through the help of the lighting; everything surrounding the woman and faucet is of less significance. The light also shines on the model’s hair and legs, captivating the audience with seduction and beauty. The vague lighting establishes the tone to be mysterious, generating darker tones to surround the model and faucet. The light to dark contrast determines where the importance lies, allowing individuals who are unaware of the company, and what they retail, to direct their attention to a specific location. The officer, casted in shadows, is presented in darker tones whereas lighter tones usually portray good and darker tones portray bad. But upon further examination, the image conveys a deeper message while representing the classic minimal basis of the collection. The model attracts to both male and female audiences through seduction and the creative promotion of a bathroom fixture. The plain black attire of the model represents the minimalistic yet bold design of Kohler’s faucet collection. The lighting directs the focus towards the model and the faucet. An element of want is incorporated through the use of text to relate seduction with a simple yet elegant faucet. The mystery behind as to what the faucet is used for and the suspect’s hand in the investigation is intriguing to say the least. Generally, most bathroom appliance companies do not take on such an abstract effort to promote their product.
