They believe that high level of medical science is not necessary, but they do believe that good health mentally and physically, is a gift from God and that needs are to be taken care of (Cleveland Clinic, 2017). In other words, they believe that medicine may help their conditions, but God can heal them. In some Amish districts, insurance is discouraged, including medical insurance (Cleveland Clinic, 2017). They believe that it is a “worldly product” and if purchased, it shows lack of faith in God. Due to this, the Amish may seek medical treatment but only if it is an emergency or an important concern to the community. The Amish believe that the heart is the soul of the body, and that children who have not been baptized can receive a heart transplant (Cleveland Clinic, 2017). As previously stated earlier, the Amish believe that God can heal them . For this reason, the Amish pays little attention to preventative care, so it is difficult to stress the importance of immunizations, cancer screenings, PAP smears, and mammograms. Not only is it because they believe God heals, but it may be because they cannot afford the preventative care. Nurses should also be aware that Amish do not believe in birth control, discourage use of Life Flight helicopters, refuse autopsies, and will need to have permission from the church in order to go to a hospital because the church typically pays for their care.
