James 1:27 states "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world."[2] When I initially read this verse, my mind immediately began to think of third world countries and the situations I have witnessed with my own eyes. As I began to compare the scripture to our public health system, I realized that we often miss what is right in front of us because we allow outside factors to distract us from our overall goal of providing proper care for each other. Our system is consistent with this verse in its provision for women and children.
