Towards the beginning of United States involvement, the administration was waiting for something to happen that they could use to convince the public. However, in most cases, there is normally another way to do things, a different outcome than war. One thing that could have been done instead of entering the war was staying neutral. Although the Germans attacked unarmed and neutral ships, they did so because America did not heed the warnings given by Germany. The government, instead of looking for ways to join the fight, could have stayed out of it by, for example, setting a temporary ban on trade with Britain during war times. However, this in turn could of heightened tensions between America and Britain, and eventually lead to more conflict. Then there is always the more diplomatic way as an option. Although it may be hard to do during wartimes, when tensions and the possibility of espionage or assassination are high, talk to Germany. Find out why it is sinking ships, which is to break British blockades and limit supplies entering the fight, and why, if it’s true, Germany wants Mexico to help invade the United States, who at the time was supposed to be neutral. Finally, there’s a third option: being truly neutral like initially stated. If America was truly neutral, then Britain, who is an ally to America, wouldn’t have been the only one America would be trading with. It would also be trading with Germany or some other Central Power country. By only selectively trading with Britain, it may be seen as siding with Britain in the war, which is why Germany already saw the United States as an enemy even before the declaration of
