September 11, 2001, a day that will forever be engraved as one of the worst days in American history. Two planes struck the two towers of the World Trade Center. Another plane hit the pentagon, and a final plane was crashed in a Pennsylvania field. The sight of black smoke filling the blue skies and civilians jumping from 50 stories up just to die anyway but fire haunted Americans from coast to coast. At the end of the day, one photo was taken that gave hope to Americans that we can move on and bring those responsible to justice.

On the Japanese island of Iwo Jima in 1945, a photo was taken that would give strength to the American people about America’s war in the Pacific. It shows six American soldiers raising a flag on top of the island 's volcano peak. U.S. forces had taken the island and advanced one island closer to the Japanese mainland. This photo looks very similar to the photo of the three firefighters raising the flag in the rubble of what was once the world trade centers. People compared the two photos after the 9/11 one was published on September 12, 2001. Both show that America has faced challenges and can overcome them. No one knew what would happen as result of the terror attacks, as they did not know what happened after Iwo Jima. America ended up winning the war and brought peace back to the world for the time being. After 9/11, everyone thought the world was over and we would never recover.
