When Billy Collins wrote “The Names," America was enamored by tragedy. Speaking of tragedy, the pain in his poem is shockingly detailed among few lines. The presentation of his captivating words, paints pictures in the minds of his readers. For me, as I read this piece of his work I had the same experience. The United States monuments Sept. 11, 2001, as the day that will never be forgotten. My insight will reflect on the effects this attack had on our communities, lives of Americans and the tightening of the security in the U.S.A. Right off the top communities were hit hard, effects of the event put citizens in financial binds. Although times got difficult it brought civilians, closer together as a Nation. This day upon all attempts of attack, one being physically threatened and secondly being emotionally torn. From an emotional standpoint, poeple were killed, injured or lost a loved one very close to their hearts. Throughout this catastrophic event deaths totaled 2,996. There was 2,977 victims and 19 hijackers that died. Plus, a total of 6,000+ non-fatally injured citizens among the wreckage. Collins says, “Among thousands of flowers heavy with a dew like the eyes of tears, and each had a name.” This also brought hurtful emotion an uncomforting sadness for me. That statement, “flowers are like the people, the dew are the tears for the fallen and broken hearted.”(Lines: **-**; Page: **-**) As for flowers, each flower, not one is ever created the same. Every person is unique even beautiful in their own way. Confused, angry and sad we set out to mend our broken emotions by conforming. Americans came to see themselves in a physical threat, because of the fact they blindsided us by attacking. So grasped the beginning of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq shortly after 9/11. Knowing that the terrorists put us all in harm’s way, they threatened our lives and freedoms. Furthermore, the physical devastation we endured during this unexpected attack was horrific.
