Amazon As An Information System Essay example

Amazon as an Information System The year 1955 started the beginning of a historic online ordering system. Even though it began as a website that only carried books, the creator, Jeff Bezos knew from the very beginning that he wanted Amazon to be “an everything” store (D’Onfro, 2014). However, before becoming Amazon, Jeff Bezos wanted to name the system many different things, to include, Cadaver and Relentless. Oddly enough, if a user tries to visit relentless.com today, it will send them to Amazon’s home page. The company was originally so small that employees were able to collectively look at each incoming order to see if they knew the customer. Though, by the end of the first month, they had become so busy; there was no longer time for that.
Characteristics of the Users of the System Amazon would be considered a personal-web based system rather than a work-related system, due to the fact that it is used mainly for personal reasons. As far as who uses the service the most, BI Intelligence determined that “older shoppers are more loyal to the service than the younger crowd” (Smith, 2015). While only 9% of users younger than 20 years old use the system, a whopping 48% of users between the ages of 40-49 take advantage of the site. These numbers have increased profoundly since the introduction on “Amazon Prime”. Amazon Prime allows users to pay a yearly fee of $99 and in return they receive two day shipping along with many other additional benefits.
