This paper focuses on the likelihood there is for alcoholism to start during adolescence. This stage of life is defined as “the transition period from childhood to adulthood, extending from puberty to independence” (1) (Pg. 197). Adolescence is characterized by dealing with the issue of “identity vs role confusion” (1) (Pg. 203). This leads teenagers to constantly question their selfhood, interests, past, present, and future. Regularly asking themselves about their identity can guide them to make wrong decisions such as drinking and with time becoming alcoholics. When trying to find out the answer to “Which self should I be?” and fit in with popular teens that drink, you can see drinking alcohol as a solution (1) (Pg. 203). Others can definitely influence and mislead you to taking a sip and end up becoming an alcoholic because as TIME says, “If drinking starts at puberty, it’s more likely to lead to alcohol problems” (3).
Research was conducted and indicates that during adolescence, “the brain experiences more growth and change that at any other stage of life except infancy. It could be that this explosion of development puts young teens at especially high risk for addictions” (3). This along with “people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States. More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks” shows adolescence is undoubtedly a very possible cause of the societal issue alcoholism
