I’ve attended this sporting event all 4 years at DHS and have loved to watch this event even before I was in highschool. This year students decided to take it up a notch. As a Senior, this year’s Turkey Bowl seemed especially critical. A chance for us to cement our legacy and finally go out on top. As I was about to walk into the game that early November morning, I saw students congregating right outside the door forming what looked to be a tailgate. I walked over to many cars pulled slightly out of their spots so that people were able to fit behind them and maintain some anonymity. 15 feet across from them was a family getting ready for the game by playing baggo, cooking eggs and throwing a football. I thought what I was about to see was going to be a normal high school tailgate: everyone eating food, sitting around, throwing a football, and generally getting excited for the game. When I entered the man-made barrier of cars I was immediately met with 2 people chugging vodka. Another group was guzzling down beers as quickly as they could while loud music was playing in the background. I navigated through the stream of kids bumping their woozy bodies almost knocking them over. Each had some sort of alcoholic drink ranging from champagne to beer. I believe that the more people who understand this and come to reality will easily see this. The more that we as community do this, the more there will be change. The question now becomes, “Are you going to do something?” and if so “What are you going to do?” and “How are you going to do it?”. The Striving Youth Task Force along with The Youth Asset Team have created a social media ad campaign to help raise awareness of irresponsible drinking by adults that lead to the enabling of teens in Darien. The campaign is aimed to change social norms of drinking by depicting teenagers drunk passed out with alcohol poisoning and with adults drinking at Christmas parties with young children watching. The ad campaign is coming out late January and will be featured on Facebook with a link to a website that will have all of the statistics of teenage drinking and adult drinking in
