Epigenetics is the study of how changes and environmental factors experienced by an organism can affect the way genes are expressed without altering the genetic code. Epigenetics has also been linked to ageing. The reason why epigenetics affects ageing is because the DNA methylation acts as a clamp on the chromosomes, so when it comes time for the cell to replicate and unwind its chromatin from around the histones to copy the DNA, the methylation groups don’t allow that segment of DNA from being unwound. Therefore those nucleotide pairs aren’t read and the gene isn’t expressed. The idea that free radicals, and in particular reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced from normal metabolism could be the primary cause of aging was proposed by Harman in the early 1950s. This author has not been working in a healthcare facility and performing patient care for approximately 12 years. After obtaining my master’s degree in Healthcare Operations Management, I would like to find a position of directing a geriatric facility. There are many factors that I believe influences a state’s life expectancy. A few factors I believe influence a state the most are; gender, race, environment, accessibility to healthcare, education, and the socioeconomic status of the population.
