Gerontological Perspective

As a student majoring in gerontology, my role is to be a sponge, soaking up as much knowledge as can be gleaned from any of the resources that can be obtained. With the possibility of attending the AGHE Annual Meeting, the amount of said available resources will grow exponentially. The information gained from attending the Annual Meeting will be brought back to American River College and shared among my peers, mentors, and instructors. There are four basic assumptions of Lifespan Perspective. These assumptions state that development is: lifelong, multidimensional and multi-directional, highly plastic, and affected by multiple, interacting forces. First, development is lifelong, meaning that there is no certain period in a person’s life that is more influential than another. changes in development happen throughout life and occur in three ways: physical, cognitive, and emotional/social. The Way We Age Now by Atul Gawande focuses on the importance of the care geriatricians provide, and yet how society tends to avoid it. Patients enjoy expensive medical equipment feeding their hope that the “troubles of the body can be fixed for good.” Students avoid going into the practice of geriatrics too because the pay is not as gratifying as it would be if they became a plastic surgeon or radiologist. However, the duties of geriatricians are so simple and focused that they can actually prolong the health and independence of elders, therefore, keeping them out of long-term care.…

We often times associate retirement with an excessive amount and spare time. I can only assume that contributing to society is a wish or desire we all wish to fulfill, regardless of our age. The results in this study made me realize that a successful part of aging may also include challenging oneself and learning something new each and every day, whether it be inside a classroom or though lived experiences. For many reasons individuals may not be able to attain the levels of education they would have wanted to. Life does happen, after all.…

In the past, philosophers and scientists have long been interested in the process of aging. However, interests in this amazing and highly important topic was barely even discussed before the 1960s. In recent decades, the interests in aging has greatly accumulated, and the reason to that is not only the elderly takes up most of the percentage of the population, but because they make use of a sufficiently great proportion of the national spending funds. Furthermore, most people have realized that they can now have a extremely happy, active, and productive life beyond the normal retirement age. Scientifically speaking, aging is an extremely complex process and requires a number of causes.…

It is possible that it was not Knisley’s intention to portray her grandparents as such, but it does not change the fact that throughout the story they are often only seen in her company. Therefore, their dependence on their granddaughter leaves themselves “transformed into passive objects”, enabling her to portray them unconsciously into one-dimensional characters rather than actual people (Biggs 4). While a comic may intend to hold certain elements fictitious, it is hard to decipher Knisley’s goal when she places a picture of her grandparents and herself to validate that they are real (Knisley 116). In retrospect, through her narrative she imposes a perspective of her grandparents, which is the stereotypical view of elderly characters. Following Biggs’ idea, Knisley also then applies in her story the “recognition of respect and stigma of lost personal control” in the way she handles her grandparents (Biggs 10).…

Out of the many articles I've read, this one was by far one that the writing was clear and it seemed pretty accurate. Another reason I chose this article is it relates to the community by sharing information on how Social Workers who work in gerontology may better assist their clients. This was a plus for me, seeing how gerontology is one of the areas that interest me. Since this topic interests me, it was more than right to gain some knowledge from the article. In today's society, the elderly population is rapidly growing.…

Wolff, Burrell and Smith (2012) estimated that 10,000 adults are added to this number every day. This statistics account for adult whose age is from 65 and above. It is even projected that by 2030, this population will balloon from the current 12% to a staggering 20%. While Auerhanh and others (2010) claim that every NP has somewhat been an adult-gerontology NP (A-GNP), it is still undeniable that this group of people require special attention given that their conditions may not be as simple as those that an NP can encounter.…

There are many milestones that occur during the aging process, one of those processes for women is menopause. The medicalization of menopause has created a market for treatment and prevention of the symptoms related to menopause (Burrell, 2009). Menopause is defined as the “occurring 12 months after a woman’s final menstrual period” (Bjorklund, 2015, p. 54). Women usually go through menopause between 47 and 55 years old and experience a drop in estrogen and progesterone during perimenopause for 3-5 years before menopause occurs (Bjorklund, 2015). The decline in hormones causes primary aging for men and women (Bjorklund, 2015).…
