Transit oriented development (TOD) is an urban development approach that focus on the effective use of the transit system, that is the public transport system. TOD maximizes the efficiency of the transit systems by developing in high-density, and in a way that integrates different land use into a single location. TOD makes use of high-capacity, highly efficient mass transit systems such as heavy railway, streetcars and buses to achieve an efficient and sustainable urban development.
Hong Kong, with a high urban density, is one of the city that have adopted the concept of TOD. Hong Kong has developed its efficient mass transit system compromising the Mass Transit Railway (MTR), franchised buses, minibuses, taxi and ferries, integrated …show more content…
In places with high population density, heavy rail can be a good choice as it has low operation cost, and it can carry a large amount of passenger efficiently [Cite]. In places that do not have enough capital for heavy rail such as third world cities, buses can be a choice. One example is the bus rapid transit (BRT) in Curitiba in Brazil. With the backbone of the transit system, there are some other transportation modes to supplement it. Transit modes like streetcars, ferries, or taxis can be used to supplement mass transit system to reach places inaccessible by the main transit mode or places that building expensive heavy rail will be unprofitable due to the restively low population density …show more content…
With such high population concentrated in a small area, TOD becomes very efficient in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has a land area of XXXX km squared, but most part of Hong Kong is mountains or country parks, only about 23.8% of the land is built-up areas [Cite]. With development concentrates in Kowloon, northern coast of Hong Kong Island and some new towns, they can be effectively linked by transit system. Hong Kong developed the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system to provide efficient transit with large capacity. The TOD in Hong Kong is so successful that in Hong Kong, about 90% of travel is done by public transport, with MTR accounting about of 40% of it [Cite]. TOD in Hong Kong has made automobile ownership very low, which made Hong Kong one of successful case in implementing
