The Medieval Ages stated around the fifth century to the early sixteenth century. It was caused by the fall of the Roman Empire in around 476. The dark ages were not really a time of darkness. There were great advancements and inventions during that time. During the Medieval Times, there were many advances in agriculture, science and architecture. Some of the advances include the change of the number system, the change of animals in which they used to farm and the gothic architecture used during this time.

Another purpose of the gargoyle was to scare people into going inside of the cathedral for protection against the demons outside. Gothic architecture is known for having a tall design. These buttresses act to spread the weight of the tall walls. Buttresses where also decorative and elaborately, they had many different carving on them. Gothic architecture also had pointed archways. This design also helped to distribute the weight of the stone walls. Another design was the vaulted ceilings. This allowed ceilings to be taller than before and to show height, grandeur, and elegance. The vaulted ceiling used the pointed archway technology. Gothic architecture had many windows that allowed light to come in. Using the new building techniques, it emphasized light, bright windows and airy interiors, transforming castles and churches into more pleasant and majestic environment. This was new because many castles in that time were damp, dark, and moldy. They did not have stone roofs and often let rain in.
