I. Understanding Adolescents Who Self-injure
A. An increasing number of adolescents are experiencing with self-injury in order to cope with various forms of anxiety, stress, and pressure. More research has been conducted over the last 10-15 years indicating great advancement in knowledge on the topic (Klonsky, 2014)
B. Since self injury is becoming more and more prevalent among adolescents, there is a growing need for those who work closely with these teens to be educated on the issue of self-injury and to have a clear understanding of what it is, know the causes, and have a plan to help these students and their families.

B. The causes leading to self-injury in adolescents can be vast in nature, however being familiar with the most common factors is a crucial part of investigating this topic.
C. Educators oftentimes spend more waking hours with adolescents during the school year than their families, therefore it is essential for school counselors, administrators and staff to be aware of the existence of self-injury and have a plan in place to help those who are struggling with it.
IV. Role of Educators
A. There is a great need for a school-wide response to self-injury with school counselors playing an important and unique role in the delivery of services to students who self-injure. (Roberts-Dobie & Donatelle, 2007, p. 257).

B. Schools that educate their staff and are proactive in gaining knowledge and wisdom in the area of self-injury among adolescents can be a safe haven for these students.
