Non-suicidal self-injury happens when a person intentionally harms themselves by damaging and mutilating skin by cutting, burning, or hitting, etc., without the purpose of committing suicide. Adding NSSI officially to DSM-5 as a diagnosis could improve the chances of how treatment and management provided when NSSI is present without any other conditions. According to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013), it states that individuals who self-injure themselves through cutting can raise their chances of transmitting blood-borne disease if they were to share their tool of cutting with someone else.
