The SQ3R System is a 5 step active reading process that was developed by Francis Robinson(Van Blerkom, 1997) and intended to keep readers engaged in the material. Although it may seem time consuming, the overall study and comprehension time is actually minimized once the process is mastered.("Active Reading Method Like SQ3R," n.d., p. 5)
Each step, along with a brief description is listed below;
•Survey- Before you begin reading, survey all sections of the book or material paying attention to headings and the final paragraph. Look for information that directly relates to your course objectives.
•Question- As you begin to read each section, determine what question you are seeking to answer.

This habit is to conclude my reading time by reviewing notes, which in turn will tell me how I am comprehending the material and assist in information retention.(/, Chapter 5) I have always found the practice of final reflection to be successful in recalling information later, so why not use it with my reading practices.
In conclusion, it is important to know what the course objectives are as you prepare to read to learn. Having a planned reading schedule with realistic and attainable goals will ensure a successful reading outcome. The plan must consist of organization, time management, an understanding of what must be learned, consistent review and recall to monitor comprehension, and a way to fluidly recall information.
