Active Reading Definition

I understand active reading to be the act of reading something with the resolve to understand it and its purpose, and with this understanding in mind, I believe active reading to be beneficial to my reading. Active reading is beneficial to my reading as it forces me to get involved with the text through questioning, highlighting, and taking notes in order to fully comprehend the material. The time and energy spent getting to know the text not only proves beneficial for comprehension but also for recollection. In elementary and middle school I struggled quite a bit on reading comprehension quizzes because I would only read for the answers, but now I understand that active reading is the approach I should have been using when quizzing.     I chose the topic of struggling readers and strategies to help them overcome their difficulties. After searching through many books over the allotted time for this course and talking with my colleagues I was recommended Comprehension strategies: Bridges to strategic reading by Tanny McGregor. This book focused on providing students with concrete ways to understand reading comprehension and how best to apply what they have learned to their reading. McGregor (2007) focused on metacognition, building schema, inferring, questioning, main idea, visualizing and synthesizing.
