Macdonald explains that when people take shortcuts in their reading due to the lack of time, they end up skimming their reading. I tried to finish a reading as fast as possible by looking at the reading questions first and then skimming the text. This way, I would just look for the answers in the text instead of reading the whole thing twice. We tend to read more nowadays because of how we read; when we skim a text, we have enough time to read more, leading to Dwight’s term of being “well informed”. I personally read a lot of articles, understanding only the gist of a situation, but I wouldn’t fully comprehend a certain topic.…

Mortimer J. Adler's essay “How to Mark up a Book” persuades readers to start marking up books when reading. Adler brings up good points on why marking up makes us readers smarter and helps us understand what the author is saying. He then begins to talk about three different book owners. He says that the first two do not really own books because they have not physically marked up the book and keep it clean to keep the book's appearance new. He says that the one who has completely marked up the few books he/she has owned has full ownership of the books because the condition of the book shows that they have used it and continue to.…

What Mortimer Adler is trying to convey in “How to Mark a Book” is that reading means consuming, and marking up a book doesn’t mean that you are vandalizing it. It means that you are showing the book love, and that you are giving the author your respect. He advises that you should “write between the lines”, as that is equally important as reading between the lines. He believes that the practice of writing between the lines helps you to get the most out of the book you are reading. Adler goes on to state that marking up a book is imperative to your reading.…

One of the first things we talk about at the beginning of a writing course is this: What does it mean to “read like a writer?” One of the skills that helps students learn to write — or learn to write better — is to alter their reading habits so that instead of reading as readers, they begin to read as writers. The difference is in the focus of the reading. I definitely think close reading is a prerequisite for good writing. It's a way to gain knowledge of the field, to expand ideas about style and voice, and puts the writer in the position of the person he hopes will one day be reading what he writes.…

I believe it is important for us to have this skill because it gives us a better insight into what we are reading, it helps us understand on a deeper level exactly what the article is trying to tell us and in response, this teaches us better techniques and skills to become better writers. Using guidelines set by Bunn in his article, I will illustrate…

As opposed to constructivism, without sociocultural theory students would not be able to learn how to read without an expert. The zone of proximal development is defined as, “the distance between the child’s individual capacity and the capacity to perform with assistance” (Tharp and Gallimore, 1989, p.30). With the exception of innate things, just about everything we know how to do, or come to learn is learned from an expert or someone with greater knowledge. In this activity there is an expert and novice relationship; the TA is the expert and the students are the novices. The TA is the expert reader and she is teaching her students the strategies they need to reach this same capacity.…

My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…

After reading Adler’s book, I found some helpful information about studying or reading different types of materials that can help me become a better reader and learner. Reading has not been one of my strongest points in school. I have not learned how to read the meanings of important words that the other expects the reader to know. I have not mastered picking out the words that are meant to be clues or forshadowing to information the author expects the reader to catch. I try to be an exceptional reader in many different subjects but I have learned to read well enough the hard way to receive passing grades in school.…
