It is important to focus your attention on the speaker and the topic because if you don’t, you will allow yourself to become distracted. In active listening, focusing on the speaker and topic will help improve communication in the organization. I would avoid any disturbances when focusing on the speaker and topic whether it’s becoming distracted by my own thoughts, another listener, or from any technical devices such as phones and other gadgets.
It’s important to set aside your own feelings and prejudices when trying to become a better active listener. Offering your opinion is an example of poor listening skills. Allowing your feelings for the speaker to interfere with your capability to listen is another example of poor listening skills. It is important to always remember that you are the listener.

When reading an individual’s body language and facial expressions you will be able to determine how the speaker is feeling. For example, if the individual has their arms crossed they are probably not too happy. If the individual has a frown they are most likely upset. It is important to pay attention to these details in becoming a better active listener.
By using door openers you are showing the speaker that you are interested in what they are saying and are also paying attention. Asking questions and making statements in relation to the topic being discussed is an example of door openers. For instance, responding to the speaker with comments such as, that is interesting, or questions such as, can you tell me more? Are a few good examples of Door Openers.
When the speaker pauses to allow the listener to ask any questions and express how they are feeling it is important to paraphrase your feelings accurately. For example, making statements such as, “so you mean this”, or “you believe that”... Are a few ways to paraphrase your feelings
