The better students feel the better they perform. Teaching students to be empathetic is one way schools have improved the environment on campus. Active listening is a huge part of being empathetic. By becoming more empathetic and improving active listening skills, we can absolutely improve our school culture. Empathy is something everyone has the ability to feel. However, it's a learned skill. We can always improve our ability to show empathy. “Empathy is the ability to walk in another person's shoes.” What the author means by that is you can relate to how someone else feels. For example maybe you have gone through a similar experience as a friend of yours who is in a difficult experience and you are able to relate to them. In many schools empathy is used to prevent bullying. Schools want to teach kids empathy so that they have feelings for other students. “No school can be a great school unless students feel safe.” says Melinda Bossenmeyer Ed D .
