In fact “An estimated 679,000 children were victims of abuse and neglect. Of the children who experienced maltreatment or abuse, nearly 80% suffered neglect; 18% suffered physical abuse, and 9% suffered sexual abuse. ( 2013 National Abuse Statistics, 2013). There are many organizations that are fighting against the abuse of children like the Guardian Ad Litem program and Pat’s Place child advocacy center.
In the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), policy statement they address the issue of Child Abuse and Neglect. To ensure the safety of children we need systems to stay intertwined. Homelessness, abuse, education, and health need to improve their services to improve the children of our future. As social workers, we have to work with the family as a whole to ensure stability for the child.
The NASW asserts several positions surrounding the issue of child abuse and neglect. Children have the right to express their views about their living situations. Children are granted the equality to be treated with respect and dignity. A child has a right to have their views assessed in court. We must work together as a community to ensure a stable, safe, and secure home for children. All children have equal rights even if the children are from other countries. Systems put in place like group homes or foster homes should have no gaps in protecting our children financially or emotionally…
