On March 4, 1861 Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as the 16th President of the United States. During, and before, Lincoln’s Presidency the south states created a new constitution and whole new country. Tensions expanded between both sides of the country which of course led to the Civil War. Many people say the Civil War was caused because of slavery, but that is not fully true. The Civil War was a war between what people that their rights were and the true reality of their rights. Slavery was a part of the war but only a small percentage. Lincoln tried as hard as he could to keep states from seceding from the nation, which he failed with a few, but there were three states he needed to keep: Delaware, West Virginia, and Connecticut. The states were so crucial for the nation because these states are around Washington D.C., the capital of the United States. Washington D.C. is in the south. If these states were to succeed from the union the Washington would be wide open for the south to take it over. So Lincoln gave these three states the right to keep their slaves and a lot of other things so they would not succeed, but of course the Civil War was still going on. The Civil War lasted 4 years and the North took the win which led to one of, if not, Lincoln’s greatest achievement as President. The Emancipation
