A Wing and a Prayer
Small northern communities are tight knit. It’s not that everybody knows everybody else’s business, but everybody is conscious who has not come back from the trap line come dark, whose boats are out on the lake on a windy day, and what flying conditions are like as they listen for that unmistakable drone of a returning Otter or Beaver. Often people will gather and go out to wistfully search the horizon for comforting signs of their loved ones. Such was the case one heavily overcast evening. The Otter was late returning from a trip south, and an unexpected bank of clouds had rolled in blanketing the community in darkness. It was impossible to see a line of approach for a float plane to come between the islands scattered about the surface of Bowden Lake. We heard the single engine aircraft pass overhead and begin to circle the community. When the pilot did not break the circuit and head north to the closest lighted runway where he could deploy the wheels mounted in the pontoons, we knew that meant only one thing, he was running low on fuel. By the time enough boats could be organized and lights obtained to mark out some kind of safe landing passage on the lake, it would be too late.
