Creative Writing: The Hero's Journey

A series of small waves pressed the sail boat against the alge dock as his cold and cracked hands desperately yanked on the rope in an effort to raise the sails. Dark clouds had moved in the night before and had stayed overnight providing a refreshing sprinkle of rain every now and then. He looked out over the vast plain of unsettled water and saw one individual white cap rise up among the rest only to be pushed back down. Due to the lack of sunlight the frigid water appeared black and lifeless but he knew that below it was a complex community of different species. He then bent over the side of the boat and reached for its securing ropes. As he slowly untied them he began to think about what the day might have in store never considering …show more content…
Looking back the dock was merely a watermark and he knew that in a few moments he would be all alone on his boat in the mysterious Alaskan waters. Suddenly there was a violent rattling sound coming from one of the rods at the back of the boat. Energetically he raced to the back of the boat and saw that one of the rods was bent at such a angle that he had never seen before. As he grabbed the rod he could feel the power of the fish as it tried to pry the pole from his hands. IN a battle of grit and determination he cranked the rod slowly but surely pulling in the monster at the other end of the line. As he cranked, his old muscles ached with exhaustion and the arthritis in his hands made it difficult to hold on but he persevered. Then out of the black pacific water rose a distinct shimmering silver fin only to dip back down into the deep. Seeing his prize he began to overexert himself and suddenly felt a sharp pain in his chest. The rod was ripped out of his hands and he could see it fly into the water as he fell onto the deck of the boat. Holding his chest he dragged himself across the cold deck of the boat and reached into his bag of supplies. In a last ditch effort for help he fired a flare into the air. He watched as the vibrant red light shot up into the sky, leaving a trail of smoke in its path only to see it engulfed by the clouds. In defeat he leaned his head back against the side and looked up the gray sky. His eyes slowly began to close and he breathed in his final breath and then it was
