Copper The Owls: A Short Story

Copper the owl was flying through the clear, starlit night, thinking about tomorrow, which would be the hundredth anniversary of Cedar Marsh. Copper had lived in the marsh for over 90 years, and she was glad she had lived long enough to see this very special day. When Copper arrived at her grotto in a bald cypress tree, she looked at the decorations for tomorrow, which were in a pile by her door, and thought with excitement, Tomorrow is going to be a very special day indeed!, and fell into her bed. Unlike most owls, Copper was a diurnal bird, which meant she slept at night and was active during the day.
The next morning, on the hundredth anniversary of Cedar Marsh, Skittles, a two year old river otter, was awake and excited, because he knew how special today would be. He always wanted to help, so on this fantastic morning, he decided to help Copper and the other animals by setting up the decorations. When he found the pile of decorations, he thought to himself, I’m going to need some help, or else I’m not going to be able to get all these decorations up. So he decided to get his sister, Twix, and his brother, Wrigley, to help him.
“Twix! Wrigley! Get up!” Skittles squealed.
“Ugh,” Twix moaned, “Why do we have to get up so early?”

Mocha picked up the decorations and they all went back to the clearing where the celebration was to be held. Mocha, Twix, Wrigley, and Skittles set up the decoration and set up the buffet tables. When they were finished, they looked around, very proud of what they had accomplished. Twix finally convinced Skittles that it was way, way too early to be up and doing anything more than necessary, so they decided to go to sleep until everyone else was awake. They were all too tired to go back to their own rooms, so they plopped down in the middle of the clearing, and went back to

The psychological development of experiencing death during childhood creates the journey from innocence with guidance to experience. This is a prominent theme in Harwood’s poem “Barn Owl” as the “child who believed death clean and final, not this obscene” comes to the realisation of the pain and suffering of death. In the first stanza Harwood uses the metaphors “A horny fiend” which represents the child rebelling against their father and juxtaposed from that “angle- mind” which is a contrast from the father’s vision of the child. This is also a biblical reference displaying the purity of childhood. Harwood uses in stanza three’s line “master of life and death” and “a wisped- haired judge” to represent the idea that the rebellious child has…
