There are benefits that may occur when incorporating family care to a family member that suffers from a mental illness. According to a Canadian study, family members of mental health sufferers reported feelings of satisfaction, love, and pride when taking care of their loved one mental health needs (Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson, 2015). They also believed that taking care of their loved one with a mental illness made them less judgemental of others. Incorporating family members care improves clinical outcomes and increases the rates of recovery among the mental health family member (Giard,2015). Also mental health sufferers may feel more supported by family members which will help strengthen family relationships (Giard,2015).

Incorporating family care can also be a barrier by causing family role changes which can be a burden. The person affected by an mental health illness needs the support and care from family for a successful recovery. The family nurse must be aware of the potential burden of family members when taking care of a member with mental illness disease (Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson,
