Does smoking cigarettes mean in a sense that you are slowly digging your own grave? This modern day smoking ad is attempting to stop people, James Twitchell refers to as “Experiencers” in his passage, “What We Are To Advertisers”. The strategy that this anti smoking advertisement is using to prevent consumers from smoking is utilizing, human appeals such as the need for feeling safe, as well as the need to have guidance. The website PathosEthosLogos.com defines pathos as “the emotional appeal, means to persuade an audience by appealing to their emotions”. The website continues saying that “Authors use pathos to invoke sympathy from an audience; to make the audience feel what what the author wants them to feel.” That's exactly what this advertisement is doing. Emotion in this ad is what gets people's attention, it's what makes people think. Example one of pathos, the setting of this advertisement that is taken place. If you look in the background of this advertisement, at the top of the you will see a grey, gloomy overcast sky. Having an overcast as the background really sets the mood for the ad, it gives this advertisement a sorrowful type of vibe. Next are the crows, one crow is in the tree, the other flying over the funeral.
