“I’m Terrie and I used to be a smoker”

In the early 70’s many started to realize the harmful effects of smoking which caused Congress to pass the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act banning the advertising of cigarettes on television and radio starting on January 2, 1971. Ever since anti-smoking campaigns started to rise and raise awareness to others. States like California, Florida, New York and Washington created media campaigns to go along with their prevention programs. In 2013 Florida reported having its high school smoking rates fall from the national average of 15.8 percent down to 8.6. Terrie’s and reminds you of that loved one. Terrie is one of the popular candidates of the CDC's “Tips From Former Smokers” campaign. Telling her story of starting smoking at 13 than becoming a regular two packs a day smoker at 17, diagnosed oral cancer patient at 40 and losing the battle to smoking-related cancer at 53.Telling stories about how she regrets not recording her real voice for her grandchildren and missing not being able to do the simple things we all take for granted like singing to smelling cake in the oven or coffee being made in a pot. Hearing about her story makes smokers and non-smokers realize what their life could end up being. In Terrie’s Biography, the CDC Director stated, “I believe that for me and for literally millions of other Americans, Terrie put a face to the 440,000 people killed by smoking each year in the US,”. Terrie's ad showed her getting ready for her everyday life from showing her putting in her false teeth, placing her wig and showing us how she puts in her hand's free device in her throat. Seeing how her throat puffs out when she talks to the visual appearance of her skin and her voice due to her laryngectomy surgery is enough to make your skin crawl but to be told that if you smoke that could be you on the other side of the ad could scare you enough to quit on the
