On September 30, 2015, me and five of my other fellow students that are in the generic nursing program at CUNY York college, were given the opportunity to do a presentation at Selfhelp center located in Bayside, New York. We arrived at Selfhelp at 8:45am with our Health Assessment Professor Dr. Amicucci accompanying us and began our presentation around 9:00am, on hypertension. Even though I had previously volunteered in a hospital, I had never gone to any senior center. To be honest, I was shaking even before I entered the room and my nervousness was at its all time high. Since the population that we were preparing to present to was from 50-65, I had this conception in my mind that they would soon get bored of our presentation and would make angry remarks if they could not hear us properly. But this outlook of mine changed right after I had entered the room and was able to interact with …show more content…

Another important factor that we added in the presentation was to teach them how to use an automatic blood pressure machine by actually demonstrating it because many people might get false readings if they did not do the technique the proper

Now, after the weeks of practice and exposure to assessing blood pressure, I have all the confidence to perform this on anyone. It feels like a big accomplishment to me since I never used to like the thought of doing it. Not only am I able to take a resting blood pressure, but I am also able to effectively measure it during exercise.…

For me the activity of working as a group especially with other individuals who I have not worked with or talked to before was a good learning experience that had both positive and negative outcomes using Driscoll’s model of reflection as a frame work to elaborate on how I interpreted what happened, what impact the situation had on me and what I will do in the future if presented with a similar situation (Driscoll and Teh, 2001). We were required to do a 10 minute presentation for a health promotion project that we developed. I decided to work with other individuals who I didn’t know and have not worked with before as I believed I would be more productive and respectful if I worked with people I didn’t know very well. For the first tutorial…

The habitual routine and environment are altered, they dress in the hospital gown instead of comfortable and cozy home clothes; they share the living space with a complete stranger, often to satisfy their very basic human needs the patient has to push call light button and patiently wait until somebody comes to help. At this circumstances is very important to make people feel that they are respected, and their individual identity is preserved. Some ways to make the patients feel appreciated is by asking how they like to be called and call the person by the name he/ she likes to be addressed. Avoid the use of words as “sweetie”, “honey”, or “dear”. Do not talk to the elderly people as to a toddler, it’s wrong to assume that with age their cognitive abilities automatically have to diminish.…

I went in to this experience not feeling very excited, as I have worked with my frail grandmother my whole life. I know that she can be cranky and tough, and I think that I was expecting a lot more of that. I know that currently my grandmother says “good bye and good riddance” to one of her nurses every time she leaves the house because my grandmother does not like her, so I was just scared to have residents who did not want to talk to people or who couldn’t talk to people due to hearing problems, as I know that hearing declines are common with ageing. However I left feeling a lot more comfortable with the elderly population, actually not even just with the elderly population, but probably patients in general.…

Self reflection is the mental process that acquires knowledge and understanding through thoughts and experience which helps encourage self awareness. This essay focuses on assessing my objectives and how I have developed my skills from the beginning of this semester until now. At the start of semester A, I wasn’t confident in preparing for the skills sessions and workshops. I wasn 't always able to find the correct answers to the workshop questions set which made it relatively difficult for me to participate in lectures despite finding myself at the library every other day. I began by listening to knowledge based lectures online and making notes alongside the recommended reading given by my lecturers or the module guide.…
