In the book titled A Mercy by Toni Morrison, men and women are seemed to be depicted as a quote from the Bible. During this time period, which was around the time of the 1620’s in the novel the English people were living by the Bible or their own spiritual beliefs. In the Christian Bible there is a quote, that I believe that was used to depict the women and men of the early seventeen century. This quote being from Ephesians 5:3, where it says, “For men are the head of the wife like Christ is the head of the church”. Like most early history studies women were always the one to do what some will call the “light” work or simply “housework”. Florens a young girl purses the free African blacksmith who is much older while working for Jacob. Florens yearns for this man considering he’s an indentured slave, and "He could marry, own things, travel, sell his own labor." (Pp.53). Since women during this time knew that they were supposed to submit to men and obey anything they asked of them, Florens for the most part submitted to the blacksmiths in everything . Seeing they weren’t together as a married couple Florence knew her boundaries within the blacksmith until she could not anymore. ““I understand and obey the need for secrecy and when he comes to the house I never look him in the eye.”(Pp.104). When they finally decided to be affectionate towards each other Florens made she never made the move first, everything was according to the blacksmith.
