Continual professional development improves the service for clients, sustainability of projects and improvements for partnership working.
At its core it is a personal responsibility of professionals to keep their knowledge and skills current so that they can deliver the high quality of service that safeguards the public and meets the expectations of customers and the requirements of their profession.
1.2 - Analyse potential barriers to professional development.
Culture of the organisation - when professional development is not encouraged or common practice professionals can be reluctant to develop skills. The “this is how we have always done it” mentality can override the reasoning to keep up to date and reflect on practice.
Understanding – people’s levels of understanding can vary and the need to understand everything is not always necessary. Professionals should be encouraged to develop their skills and knowledge in ways they can grasp. Individuals may be reluctant to develop their professional knowledge due to reading and writing difficulties or confidence. I have found this method of learning invaluable. However the trainee will only ever be as good as the teacher. If the mentor shows bad habits/old ways of working to the mentee this can create more problems in the workplace. It is important to identify people working the way they should and that they have a supportive nurturing personality. Not everyone is suited to mentoring/buddying someone less experienced.
