    Fear In Horror Movies

    Although scholars did not approve of her writing because it was “a tissue of horrible and disgusting absurdity” (Croker), many people found the book interesting because it explored scientific theories. Another science-fiction novel that first introduced gothic writing is Dracula by Bram Stoker written in 1897. This novel appeals to the fascination of vampires and scientific creatures. Because these stories gained popularity, movie producers were inspired to create films based on horror situations. Today many of the ideas in scary movies originally came from gothic writing. Georges Méliès created the first horror film, Le Manoir du Diable, in 1896. In English this means “The Haunted Castle” or “The Manor of the Devil.” Méliès is known as “The Father of Special Effects.” Maurice Babbis of the Emerson University journal Latent Images describes Le Manoir du Diable as “a large bat that flies into a room and transforms into Mephistopheles. He then stands over a cauldron and conjures up a girl along with some phantoms and skeletons and witches, but then one of them pulls out a crucifix and the demon disappears” (Jones). Although this horror film was only three minutes long, Méliès sparked the beginning of a new genre. It was not until the 1920’s that movies began using sound. Try watching a horror movie on mute.
