What are the three layers of the eye? State their functions.

1. Sclera - outer layer of the eye, tough, thick, resists puncture (for protection.)

2. Choroid - middle layer of tissue that contains blood vessels, also darkens the eye.

3. Retina - contains photoreceptors, rods & cones. Also converts light into nerve impulses.

What is the function of the aqueous humour? (2)

supplies the cornea with nutrients and refracts light.

What is the function of the cornea? (1)

refracts the light toward the pupil.

What is the function of the lens? (1)

focuses the image on the retina.

What is the function of the pupil? (1)

the opening (hole) in the iris that allows light into the eye.

What is the function of the iris? (1)

regulates the amount of light entering the eye.

(contains muscles that allow the pupil to become larger or smaller)

What is the function of the ciliary muscle? (1)

accommodation reflex (contracts or relaxes to see at multiple distances.)

What is the function of the retina? (3)

contains photoreceptors, rods and cones.

(rods: used for dim light & cones: used for identifying colour.)

What is the function of the fovea centralis? (2)

contains only cones & is the most light-sensitive area of the retina.

What is the function of the optic nerve? (1)

transfer visual information from the retina to the brain (via nerve impulses)

What is the function of the blind spot? (1)

it is where the optic nerve attaches to the retina (no rods or cones)

Identify 4 differences between rods and cones.

1. Rods are located in the periphery, whereas Cones are located in the central.

2. There are a lot more rods than cones in the eye.

3. Rods detect movement, whereas Cones identify colour.

4. Rods are used for night vision/dim light, whereas Cones are used for bright/daylight.
