What are the drivers duties when it is assumed a hose coupling pipe has burst?

Immediately notify train controller and if protection is required the driver will protect.

- Secure loco

- apply handbrakes

- place automatic brake valve in the running position

Driver to take:

- replacement flexible hose coupling

- reducing/expanding bush

- hand lamp

- torch

- shifter

- hammer

- local radio

- Pen

- Carry bag

What is the procedure for reporting hose bag faults?

The driver must hand the defective hose coupling in at a train examiner location or loco depot.

An irregularity report must be submitted which must include:

- Number in class of vehicle

- date hose coupling was put into service

- Location of the vehicle within the consist

Note: A label is attached to each hose coupling indicating the manufacturers name and date that it went into service.

What is the procedure after a driver and competent worker crewed train has been stopped due to a loss of brake pipe air?

- Driver will leave the independent break fully applied on the automatic brake valve in the release position

- Driver must advise competent worker to place the automatic brake handle into the lap position

- Driver will close brake pipe cock on the loco side of the burst hose, replace the defective hose, reconnect the hoses, ensure that both brake pipe cocks are fully open, note the number and class of both vehicles and return to the loco

The competent worker will then:

- leave the loco and apply the necessary handbrakes

- inform the driver when this has been done and the driver will release the automatic brake

- proceed to the hose coupling that was replaced and conduct an MC brake test

- returned the vehicle secured by hand breaks and request the driver by radio to apply the automatic brake

The driver will then make at least a 70 KPA brake pipe reduction and the competent worker will release all handbrakes and return to the loco cab.

What is the procedure after a two driver crewed train has been stopped due to a loss of brake pipe air?

- Driver leaving the cab to affect the repair will apply the handbrakes on the way

- after the brake pipe coupling has been replaced the driver on the loco will release the automatic brake to allow the driver at the point of repair to conduct the MC brake test

- Driver returning from the repair will advise the driver on the loco to apply the airbrake by making at least a 70 KPA brake pipe reduction so that the handbrakes may be released

What is the procedure after a driver only crewed train has been stopped due to a loss of brake pipe air?

If the driver considers that the loco brakes will not hold the trailing load, the train must be secured by applying sufficient handbrakes and the driver must request a competent worker to be sent to the site to assist with changing the burst hose pipe coupling.
