What is ANOVA?

How is it similar to T tests?

-performs 1 test (to see if the groups are different) across all groups, keeping alpha at .05

-both measure the difference between means and the amount of variability in each group

Explain the Family Wise Error Rate

-When you run multiple T tests with an alpha of .05, you increase the probability of making a type 1 error.

-alpha increases with each comparison (family wise error rate)

What does ANOVA do/consider?

1) Variability across all groups

-individual scores relative to overall mean (SStotal)

2) Variability between groups

-mean of each group relative to overall mean of all groups

3) Variability within each group

-SSerror
