How do you recognise and interpret information on a hydrant plate?

Found on walls, gates, sides of buildings and posts.



Number between the arms of the 'H' is size in mm or inches.



Number between legs of 'H' is distance from the hydrant to plate in feet or meters.

How do you set up a hydrant?

.Called 'setting in to' or 'shipping in to hydrant'



.always use hydrant bar to lift cover



.always connect standpipe before opening valve. Always close the valve before attempting to remove standpipe.



.when cover is removed, leave in a safe place. Once standpipe and key are connected, lay cover between them over part of the pit opening. If night time, consider illuminating hazard.



.replace cover as soon as possible and never allow it to drop on to the frame,as it could crack.



.all new hydrants are screw down and open anti-clockwise but some older hydrants may open clockwise.



.hydrants should be opened and closed slowly and fully
