What is a Hydrant? |
A piece of equipment which is fixed to a water main and is used by firefighters to access water for firefighting |
What is The 2004 Fire and Rescue Service Act? |
A legislation that makes the LFC responsible for making sure there is an adequate water supply for firefighting |
The British standards for a Hydrants |
• 65mm round thread outlet • minimum water flow of 2000 litres per minute • minimum pressure of 1.7 bar with water flowing • anti-clockwise opening |
What are features and British Standards of a Hydrant? |
• 65mm round thread outlet • minimum water flow of 2000 litres per minute • minimum pressure of 1.7 bar with water flowing • anti-clockwise opening |
What is a Drain Boss / Frost Valve on a Screwdown Hydrant? |
It allows water to drain from the hydrant after it is turned off and prevents the hydrant from freezing and cracking in cold conditions |
What are Double Hydrants and how are they identified? |
• Two outlets controlled by own valve • Normally large water mains • Larger hydrant pit cover • Special hydrant plate |
The basic water supply system of hydrants, households and other premises |
Originates from reservoirs and goes to; • Treatment plants • Pumping stations • Trunk mains • Service mains It must be under pressure to reach the reservoirs |
How to recognise and interpret the information on a hydrant plate? |
They are placed on walls, gates, side of buildings and purpose built posts and normally positioned as close to the hydrant as possible • Plate will show if it singular or double • Number above H = size of main in inches or millimetres • Number below H = distance of hydrant from the plate in feet or metres |
What equipment make up Equipment Gear for a hydrant? |
• Double headed Standpipe • Hydrant Bar • Hydrant Key |
What does the Double Headed Standpipe do? |
Extends hydrant outlet to ground level and convert round thread outlet into standard instantaneous connection Pressure release lugs help put on/take off |
What are the safety precautions when removing the male coupling from the standpipe |
• helmet visor down • face turned away • hand grasped firmly on top of male coupling |
How to set into a hydrant? |
Setting into a hydrant • remove cover using hydrant bar • connect standpipe • flush hydrant with bar and key • turn off and attach hoses • attach hoses, turn on slowly, always open fully, return key into bar Closing off hydrant • close off water valve to prevent leakage after being instructed • remove hoses when it is soft and under run • remove hydrant gear and put back hydrant cover • report defective hydrants to Officer in Charge |
What are the 2 Leak Detection Devices? |
• Magnetic • Screw-on |
What is a Magnetic Leak Detection Device |
A unit that is magnetically attached to the outlet of a hydrant. • it does not need the valve to be open to work • it can safely be removed to allow the hydrant to be used • it is replaced once the hydrant has been shut down |
What is a Screw-on Leak Detection Device? |
• a 65mm screw cap connected to an electronic recording unit • connected to the hydrant outlet and the hydrant valve is left open • If used for operational use, the valve should be shut down • left at the bottom of the pit and should not be refitted • inform Water Office on return to station |
When should Hydrant Inspection and Hydrant Test be undertaken? |
• A visual inspection undertaken on a yearly basis • They are tested every 4 years between April and September |
