How did Erathostenes determine the circumference of the Earth?

Used geometry; at the same time/day in 2 different cities, you could see to the bottom of the well and in the other place you could see a pole cast a shadow. Measured the height of pole and length of shadow, by this he could measure the angle away from the sun. Measured the distance between the 2 cities. Measured to about 1/50th of a circle. Multiplied that distance by 50 to find Earth's circumference.
