The goal of this union was to gather as many members as possible regardless of the occupation that the members had
The Knights of Labor
They wanted to gather all groups in a big union, and through strength in numbers, influence the government to make reforms in the poor working environments. They proposed the end to childlabor
The Knights of Labor included women, African Americans, etc
Bankers, lawyers, stockbrokers, and gambles were excluded from membership
The Haymarket Square Riot
1886
On May 3rd, there was a union protest in Chicago.Shots rang out and a couple of workers were killed. This lead to a mass-meeting on May 4th.
The mass meeting went on as planned and the police was ordered by the governor of Chicago not to halt the meeting. The police decided to march on the protesters
Someone threw a bomb at a police office which killed him
In the end, 8 mmen were charged with responsability for the riot. All men were found guilty. Four of them were hanged and executed
The other commited suicide
Three were sent to prison
3 years later, the authorities acknowledge themselves that they had no really evidence that these men actually committed crime
These men became martyrs for the pro-union cause
The Knights of Labor were blamed for this event and lost popularity

His movement did not emphasize political reforms but rather the individual unions and their relationship with individual lawyers.
They emphasized the need for unions to negotiate intelligently with their bosses and sign contracts that would guarantee their bonuses

This was owned by Andrew Carnegie. He appointed Henry Frick to handle his affairs in this plant
Frick locked the plant and wanted to replace them with non-union labor

The workers took over the plant
Frick hired the pinkereton Detective Agency.
Employees of pinkerton company headed into homestead to try to first recapture the plant and allow the non-union labored workers to work again
The pinkertons arrived in barges. A cannon and other artillery was given to the workers from a townsman. The pinkertons were fired at by the workers and the pinkertons fought back in retaliation
