What does the Excretory system do?

It is involved in the removal of nitrogenous wastes from the blood.

How are nitrogenous wastes made?

They are made when we break down proteins.

What form of nitrogenous wastes do humans have?

Urea.

Describe 2 aspects of urea.

it is water soluble and has a low toxicity.

List the key organs in the excretory system.

Liver, Kidneys and Bladder.

What does the liver do?

It is where the protein breakdown occurs. It prepare substances by detoxifying them and then the waste products (urea) are released into the bloodstream so that it can move to the next organ.

What do the kidneys do?

They filter the blood to remove urea from it. They reabsorb essential nutrients while removing wastes. They maintain water balance and regulate salt concentration.

What is the bladder and what does it do?

It is a bag of cells that holds urine until you are ready to expel it. It also helps to squeeze the urine out.

What is homeostasis?

Homeostasis is when the body needs to maintain a stable internal environment to function correctly. This involves maintaining temperature, essential nutrients and removing wastes.

What molecules pass through the capillaries walls into the Bowman's capsule?

Glucose, urea, water (but not all), salts and amino acids. They are small.

What molecules dont pass through the capillaries walls into the Bowman's capsule?

red blood cells, white blood cells and blood proteins. They are big.

What do birds excrete?

Birds excrete their poo and wee as one - uric acid as a solid.

What do fish excrete?

Fish excrete ammonia which is highly toxic.
