2. A urinary tract infection, also known as a UTI, occurs when “bacteria gets into the urinary tract and multiplies.” (Kidney foundation) In other words, a UTI is a bacterial infection in the urinary system, which consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most UTIs occur in the bladder and urethra. A UTI in the bladder is called cystitis, which is caused by the bacteria E. coli, and a UTI in the urethra is called urethritis, which occurs when gastro intestinal bacteria from the anus infect the urethra. The most common cause for UTIs is the spread of bacteria through the urethra. The bacteria can grow and reproduce in the urinary tract, which causes an infection (known as a UTI).

Risk factors for UTIs include: diabetes, blockages in the urinary tract, sexual activity, pregnancy, previous UTI history, lack of estrogen, having a catheter, structural problems. Being a diabetic puts someone at risk since their body’s defense system is weakened. Blockages in the urinary tract (kidney stones) can block the urine flow which causes UTIs. Being sexually active increases the likelihood of getting a UTI since it pushes bacteria into the urethra. Being pregnant causes UTIs since pregnancy involves changes in the urinary tract. UTI history is involved since it is likely for someone to get it again if they are prone to it. Lack of estrogen allows bacteria to grow more easily. Having a catheter can create a buildup of bacteria, which leads to a UTI. Lastly, having structural problems at birth can change the urinary
