Why did the revolt of the northern earls occur

Powerful nobles were unhappy with Elizabeth’s policies and wanted Mary Queen of Scots to rule instead

Order of events in revolt of the northern earls

1. Northern earls of Westmorland and northumberland marched their people south


2. Rebels stormed the cathedral and held illegal mass there


3.Nobles in Cheshire & Lancaster-shire refused to join the rebellion and stayed loyal to the queen


4. As rebels matched south, Mary Queen of Scots was moved to a prison further south


5. Earl of Sussex caught up with the rebels, he had an army of 10,000 men loyal to the queen

What happened to the rebels after the failed revolt of the northern earls

Westmorland- managed to get from scotland to france but having lost all wealth and power, he died in poverty in 1601


Northumberland- captured and beheaded in York in 1572


Duke of Norfolk- imprisoned but later released(as he was not directly involved) however he got caught in another plot with the queen later on.


- 450 more people were executed to show Elizabeth had power

What happened in the ridolfi plot

Italian banker Roberto Ridolfi believed it was his duty to help catholics gain the throne. The plan was that the duke of Alva would lead a group of dutch catholics to invade, Elizabeth would he murdered and replaced by Mary Queen of Scots who would then marry the duke of Norfolk. However Elizabeth found a bag of coins with cypher code and she found out the intent

What happened in the throckmorton plot

Plan was to kill Elizabeth and replace her with Mary queen of Scots. The duke of guise and some important Spanish nobles would lead an invasion with support of Spanish troops to ensure Elizabeth’s new position was secure. However her spies searched his house and found evidence of his involvement and he confessed everything under torture. Mary was then placed under close guard

What happened in the babington plot

Babington and 5 others planned to murder elizabeth and place Mary queen of scots on the throne. They sent messages under beer barrels and Mary queen of scots said she would help. Servents working for sir francis walsingham found the writing and reluctantly Elizabeth agreed to put Mary on trial for treason and execute her in 1587. Babington was also executed
