How do you maintain safety with double line cross to opposite line?

The competent worker must ride in the leading vehicle (the part of the train going forwards) while the train is setting back on to the opposite running line.

ETM - End of Train Marker

How are lights arranged on the front and rear of the train before crossing to the opposite line?

To maintain safety while the shunting movement is taking place from one running line to the other, during darkness or inclement weather, the head and tail signals of the train being shunted must be arranged to show red lights to the approaching train from either direction.

Before setting back onto the wrong line:

- ETM or red tail light displayed

- front red marker lights

- headlights and ditch lights OFF

How are lights arranged on the front and rear of the train when stopped on the opposite line?

Immediately the train has stopped on the opposite line, the ETM must be removed from the rear of the train.

This ensures that red lights will not be visible to train approaching from the rear.
