Difference between benign tumors and cancer
Cells reproduce for tissue growth & repair. Cells divide in an orderly way. Sometimes cell division and growth are out of control. A mass or clump of cells develops this new growth of abnormal cells is called a tumor. benign tumors don't spread to other body parts and rarely threaten life and almost never grow back after removal. cancer invades and destroys nearby tissue and may be life threatening and some grow back after removal.
Cancer risk factors
Risk factors:
-aging, most cancers occur in persons over 65
-tobacco use
-sunlight,tanning beds, sunlamps
-Ionizing radiation
-certain chemicals
-some viruses and bacteria
-certain hormones
-family history
-alcohol
-Poor diet, lack of physical activity and being over weight
Cancer Signs & Symptoms
-thickening or lump in breast or any other body part
-new mole or an obvious change in an existing mole
-A sore that doesn't heal
-Hoarseness or cough that doesn't go away
-Changes in bowel/bladder habits
-Discomfort after eating
-A hard time swallowing

Pain relief or control, rest, exercise, fluids, nutrition, prevent skin break down, prevent bowel problems (constipation,diarrhea), dealing with treatment side effects, psychological and social needs, spiritual needs, sexual needs. Anger, fear and depression are common. support, talk to them, don't avoid them. Listen and use touch to show that you care. support person and family.
How Immune System Disorders occur
the immune system protects the body from microbes, cancer cells, and other harmful substances. It defends against threats inside and outside the body. Immune System Disorders occur from problems with the immune response.
The response may be inappropriate, too strong, or lacking. The immune system can attack the body's own normal cells, tissues, and organs.

an inflammatory disease affecting the blood cells, joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, heart and brain.

The virus is transmitted mainly by: unprotected sex with an infected person, needle and syringe sharing among iv drug users, HIV infected mothers before or during child birth, and hiv infected mothers through breast feeding
Signs & Symptoms of AIDS
appetite loss, cough, depression, diarrhea over a week, lack of energy, fever, headache, memory loss, confusion, and forgetfulness, mouth or tongue has spots or blotches maybe has sores or white patches, night sweats, pneumonia, short of breath, etc

Signs & Symptoms: a rash or blisters occur on the skin, burning or tingling pain, numbness, or itching. occurs on one side of the body or face-after a few days or a week-a rash with fluid-filled blisters appears. pain is mild to intense. Most common in people over 50.

Treatment: doctor orders anti-viral meds and pain meds. 3-5 weeks to heal for healthy person. Vaccine is now available.
Quality of Life
Any illness changes and affects the family. Especially with cancer. The person with cancer may have health problems for a long time. They require hospital stays and medical & clinical appts. The same with AIDSand some immune system disorders. Nursing center care may be needed short or long term. The person and family have many reactions-fear, anger, worry, guilt. Good communications skills are important sometimes all you have to do is listen.
Remember to protect the persons rights. Privacy, confidentiality and personal choice are VERY IMPORTANT. also meet the person's basic needs to best of your ability.
