What is meant by condensing?

The transition of a substance from a gas to a liquid

What is meant by boiling?

The transition of a substance from a liquid to a gas

What is meant by freezing?

The transition of a substance from a liquid to a solid

What is meant by melting?

The transition of a substance from a solid to a liquid

Changing state-from solid to liquid

When a solid is heated, its particles gain more energy. This makes them vibrate more, which weakens the forces that hold the solid together. At a certain temperature, called the melting point the particles have enough energy to break free from their positions. This is called melting and the solid turns into a liquid.

Changing state-from liquid to gas

When a liquid is heated, the particles again get more energy. This energy makes them move faster, which weakens the attractive forces holding the liquid together. At a certain temperature, called the boiling point, the particles have enough energy to overcome the forces between them. This is boiling and the liquid becomes a gas.

Changing state-gas to liquid

As a gas cools, the particles no longer have enough energy
