This can be describes as the safest and most efficient methods of using your body to gain a mechanical advantage.

Body mechanics

One important key to preventing injury is correct alignment of the spine. There are two main extreme postures. What are they?

1) Swayback/lordosis- ( think brittany)

2) Kyphosis (my back/slouch)

What are some of the general guidelines for moving and lifting patients?

Always try to use an even number of rescuers to maintain balance

Keep the weight as close to the body as possible

Do not hyperextend your back, or lean back from the waist

Grasp should be made with palms up

Whenever possible push instead of pull

This lift is the technique that offers you the best defense against injury and protects the patient with a safe stable move. It helps those with weak knees or thighs. Keep your back locked and avoid bending at the waist. Palms and fingers come in complete contact with the object and fingers should be bent at the same angle.

Power Grip

The squat lift is a useful alternative to the power lift if you have one weak leg, one weak ankle, etc. Where does the weaker leg go?

Slightly forward and you push up with your stronger leg

There are three categories of moves, what are they?

Emergency Moves

Urgent

nonurgent

What is an emergency move?

These moves should be performed when there is immediate danger to the patient of to the rescuer. Use this move when no other option is available.

Ex: Fire or danger of fire, Exposure to explosives or Hazardous materials, Inability to protect the patient from other hazards at the scene.

What are the three types of emergent moves?

The Armpit-forearm drag

The shirt drag

The blanket Drag

What is an urgent move? What is the one urgent move we got?

Similar but not as urgent as emergent. An example of this would be a motor vehicle accident in which a spine board or vest would take to much time.

The one move is Rapid Extrication

When should we use Rapid Extrication (Urgent)?

Should be used in patients with any abnormality of the airway, breathing, oxygenation, or circulation and for those with critical injuries and illnesses.

Ex: Altered Mental status, inadequate breathing, fractures of long bones, etc.

There are multiple variations however, the procedure should be done rapidly without any compromise to the patients spine

What are the four nonurgent moves?

Direct ground lift, Extremity Lift, Direct Carry Method, Direct Carry Method

Name some of the equipment we use for transportation of patients?

Wheeled Stretcher,Bariatric Stretchers, Portable stretcher, Stair Chair, Backboards, Scoop Stretcher, Basket Stretcher, Flexible stretcher.

What body position do we put an unresponsive patient with no suspect head, neck, or spinal injury?

Left Lateral Recumbent

What position do we put a patient with chest pain or discomfort or with breathing difficulties?

Position of comfort, sitting up if comfortable.

What about a patient with suspected spinal injury?

This patient should be immobilized on a long backboard.

What position should we put a patient in who is in shock?

supine, unless protocol indicates otherwise

An alert patient who is nauseated or vomitting?

Should be transported in a sitting or a recovery position

What position should we sit a patient who is in her third trimester?

Positioned on her left side. This position takes the weight of the baby off the large blood vessels and nerves in the abdomen, preventing supine hypotensive syndrome.

If a carry needs to be conducted and it is only you and your partner, how should the EMTs be positioned?

One at the head ( the stronger guy) and one at the foot. Foot end needs to walk backward.

If we are planning on moving a patient up or down stairs and the patients mental status allows it, what device should we use?

A stair chair
