When brake blocks require attention, what safety precautions are to be taken?

1) vehicle must be secured using the park/handbrake or wheel chocks.

When can a missing brake block not be replaced by a driver?

1) If brake block can be isolated, and minimum brake ratio is maintained.



2) if correct tools are not available or job is beyond their ability.

4) If changing the brake block will cause greater delay than running at reduced speed.

How are brake blocks on a passenger vehicle with bogie mounted brake cylinders & slack adjusters replaced?

1) Isolate bogie cut-out cock/triple valve isolating cock.




2) Bleed auxiliary reservoir, isolate and release the park brake if necessary.




3) Allow the brake piston to retract.




4) To allow enough clearance to access the brake block:


- Unwind the adjusting nut.


- unwind the operating rod (mechanical slack


adjuster).


- Pull out the pin & turn piston rod (JSLA or


HSL).




5) Knock brake block pin out (upwards) using a hammer & remove brake block.




6) place new brake block in shoe and insert pin.




7) slack adjusters must be re-tightened to correct brake piston travel.

What needs to be considered when changing a brake block on one side of a vehicle.

the thickness of the brake block on the other side of the truss bar (cannot vary more than 15mm)


- otherwise brake block must also be changed.

What must be conducted after a brake block has been changed?




What else must a driver complete?

An MC must be conducted to ensure correct operation of the air-brake.




Vehicle must be green carded so that train examiner can conduct a through examination.




An irregularity report must be handed in at the completion of the shift.

How are wedge & sprung steel type brake block pins inserted?

1) Wedge type: tapped firmly home.




2) Sprung steel type: Inserted all the way, until locating bend engages at the bottom of the shoe.
