What is Shingles?

Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus which also causes chickenpox. After having chickenpox, the virus becomes dormant and resides within the cells of the nervous system. Reactivation of the virus causes shingles.

What is meningitis?

Meningitis is inflammation of the braina and spinal cord membranes (meninges) typically caused by an infection.

What is spinal shock?

Spinal shock is a temporary reduction of or loss of reflexes following a spinal cord injury.

What is sciatic nerve damage?

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. The most distinctive sign of sciatica is pain that radiates from your lower back into the back or side of the legs.



Symptoms include, mild aches to sharp severe pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in your foot or legs, weakness of knee flexion and foot movement.

What is Areflexia?

Areflexia is a condition in which your muscles dont respond to stimuli. People who have areflexia dont have typical reflexes, such as a knee jerk reaction.

What is ganglion?

Ganglion is any group of nerve cell bodies in the PNS.

What is Funiculi?

Funiculi (columns) is a bundle of nerve fibers enclosed in a sheath of connective tissue or forming one of the main tracts or white matter in the spinal cord.

What is Fasiculi?

Fasiculi (tracts) are organized bundles that carry impulses along the spinal cord.

What is a lumbar puncture? (Spinal tap)

A lumbar puncture is the procedure of taking fluid from the spine in the lower back through a hollow needle, usually sone for diagnostic purposes.



Low risk of hitting the spinal cord when going at L3-4 for the spinal tap because there are only nerves there.

What's the difference between epidural anesthesia and spinal anesthesia?

An Epidural anesthesia is when a drug is inserted into the EPIDURAL SPACE around the spinal cord, does not go through the dura. Catheter is used.



A Spinal anesthesia (spinal block) is when a drug is inserted into the SUBARACHNOID SPACE, going through the dura. uses one needle, one shot, not continuous.
