Imperialism
a country that takes over another country. (1870-1914)
Settlement Colonies
groups of people landing somewhere and starting a town.
Ex: Africa
Dependent Colonies
a country sends elite members of their society to rule an existing group of natives.
Ex: Africa
Protectorate
native leaders who were allowed to keep their titles but a European country was in charge.
Spheres of Influence
an area that a country takes a special interest in and other European countries respect it.
Paternalism
a policy or practice of treating or governing people in a fatherly manner, sometimes providing for their needs without giving them rights.

Africaans
language developed in the 7th century when the Dutch invaded Africa; it is the official language of South Africa.
Boers
descendants of Dutch settlers; speak their own language, live in 3 colonies: Natal (SE), Orange Free State (W), and Transvaal (N). Had to move SE b/c the Brits invaded.
Suez Canal
built by France in 1804. It goes right through the Isthmus of Suez to connect the Mediterranean Sean and the Red Sea.

Great Britain wanted to build dams to control the flow of the water and the irrigation systems in Africa.
Samory Touré
Muslim reformer & military leader - was Mandingo. He led a revolt against the French in Senegal. 1998: French captured him.
Sir Henry Stanley
a journalist - fueled interest in central Africa. 1869: The New York Herald hired him to find Dr. David Livingston. 1871: Stanley found him. He got King Leopard to develop the Congo for him.
Leopard II
King of Belgium, Stanley came to him for help with his search. Used slave labor in his 9,000 sq. mile colony, Congo. Turned it into Belgian govt. in 1908. Was also a rubber stealer.
Shaka
a Zulu leader; created the Zulu empire w/ Brits and Boers. Under his rule, his army was defeated by Boers & had their empire destroyed.
Cecil Rhodes
British businessman, led Great Britain’s move inland to Cape Colony - arrived in 1870. In 1890, he controlled South African diamond production + Zimbabwe. Took over Orange Free State -> Boer war.
Boer War
(1899) Between Boers & Brits. Was over diamonds (gold). After 3 years, Brits defeated Boers. Brits were able to mine in the Transvaal – the Dutch/Boers were allowed to farm & speak their own language, & and influence politics.
Menelik II
Emperor of Ethiopia, negotiated a treaty with Italy. In 1896, Italy invaded; Menelik’s forces fought them off. He resisted imperialism.
