What is an Exponent?
The number of times the base is used as a factor.
What does -3 to the 4th mean?
-(3x3x3x3) = -81
What does (-3) to the fourth mean?
(-3) x (-3) x (-3) x (-3) = 81
What does the Multiplication Exponent law "Product of Powers" state?
An exponent times an exponent means you add the exponents.
What does the Multiplication Exponent law "Power to a Power" state?
An exponent in parentheses to the power of another exponent means you multiply the exponents.

Distribute exponents to all numbers in the parentheses.
